Joint Spring School

The SUTROFOR programme has an emphasis on applied research exposing you to the realities of the tropics. The first study year ends with a two-week field course in a developing country. The Joint course "Sustainable tropical forestry spring school" has for example been held in Costa Rica, Ethiopia and Nepal. This course is a compulsory component of the SUTROFOR course.

The course gives you an opportunity to visit and observe a range of field sites of diverse forest structure, land use and management practices. You will meet the local population and get a chance to understand local cultures and their dependency on the forest resource. In the second week, you will work in small teams on a project evolved in discussion with teaching staff. In this way, you will develop skills in designing and executing a research project and develop a critical and analytical approach to the natural and managed tropical forest environment.
